The „Old General Hospital“, originally erected in the 18th century, was transferred to the University of Vienna.
The fabric of buildings and courtyards with affl uent vegetation was refurbished to the requirements of the university, housing various departments of theoretical sciences.
The existing buildings which are under preservation of the Historic Building Department, where sensitively restored and transformed – in view of spatial and functional requirements of the different department. New wings were realized as modern structures.
New entrances were created in order to open the main courtyard to the pedestrian flow of the surrounding urban area. Additional functions were implemented such as library, shops and restaurants which created a lively ambiance for students and passers-by.
