Originally this pavilion was designed for the world exhibition 1958 in Brussels by architect Karl Schwanzer. From 1962 to 2001 the structure served as Museum of Modern Art and was listed as a historic building under preservation.

The refurbishment of the building comprehended structural improvement, fire rating upgrading and the renewal of the façade according to energy efficiency standards.

The exterior appearance of the building remained unchanged.

A new basement floor houses a sculpture collection and a museum restaurant. A sunken courtyard serves as sculpture garden and atrium. The newly erected small administration tower acts as a signal.
